Horror Stars on OTR Part 2! [Re-Post, but whatcha gonna do...]

And for those of you who cried "Encore!" - here it is! If you are like me (there's a scary thought right there!), we all love to see the old Horror stars of the golden years of Hollywood strut their stuff and do their thang - so their radio performances are indeed an undiscovered treasure trove of more portrayals of murderers and madmen. Unfortunately, the same issues that haunted Bela Lugosi, and possible dificulties with working with him as PERCIEVED by the entertainment industry (ie the RUMOUR that Bela had a less than perfect grasp of English and was a hassle to work with) means that his radio performances seem to be few indeed.... so that's all we gots for ol' Bela, but we still have more stuff from Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre, Vincent Price, John Carradine, and some-one not mentioned till now, Basil Rathbone. Allthough not stereo-typed as a "heavy" like the others mentioned (I must say that Vincent Prices' roles were much more diverse in the earlier part of his career, often as a heroic leading man - he was the best known radio version of "The Saint" after all), Basil Rathbone did play Wolf Frankenstein in "Son of Frankenstein" with Boris as well as tons of performances as Sherlock Holmes with Nigel Bruce on the screen AND radio and LOTS more cool stuff besides. So as i've said before, i'll watch ANYTHING with any of these actors, and i'll pretty much listen to any of their radio performances too. Here's another bunch of radio shows as a zip file on the Holloweenie tip -

Hollywood Playhouse starring Vincent Price as a bullfighter(!) in "Hour of Truth".

Vincent Price more true to form as a complete homicidal nutter in Hollywood Star Times' adaption of that classic meller, "The Lodger".

Plus Vincent in the EXCELLENT Suspense episode about ham actors (...oh yeah!) - "Rave Notice" from 1958!

John Carradine on the Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis Show!

John Carradine on an episode of the quiz program "Information Please" .

Basil Rathbone in the weird-oh TALES of FATIMA - "Time to Kill".

Boris Karloff(!) on SPOTLIGHT REVIEW with Spike Jones & the City Slickers.

More Boris on INNER SANCTUM in "Corridor of Doom", plus an episode of "Philco Radio" with him too!

Peter Lorre in a gem from "Mystery in the Air" - "The Queen of Spades" and also another ripping yarn from the same series - "Beyond Good and Evil".

PlusPeter Lorre on the Bob Hope Show from 1947 with a very funny "Inner Sanctum" parody by the two.

Peter Lorre in the May 25 1941 episode of INNER SANCTUM "Death is a Joker".

Horror Stars on OTR

Well gang, it's your old pal Hyper Dave with a little midnight treat for those of you, like me, who love the old classic Hollywood horror films of the 1930's, 40's & 50's - and the stars of these films: Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Peter Lorre and Vincent Price. I'll watch ANYTHING with one of these actors in it, and I mean ANYTHING. It should then come as no surprise that this fearsome foursome also appeared on radio in similar roles to the ones they played on the big screen. So here's 13 different radio shows featuring these guys strutting their stuff, and as an added bonus, one of them also features that other notable horror actor from the same period, John Carradine starring with Lugosi in "Mystery House".

Peter Lorre in the MOST EXCELLENT episode of SUSPENSE from Jan. 19th 1943 "The Devils' Saint.

Peter Lorre gives an amazing performance in Mystery in the Air from August 21st 1947 episode "The Horla".

Peter Lorre in Mystery in the Air from Sept. 4th 1947 - "The Mask of Medusa".

Peter Lorre as Spike Jones' "musical" guest on "Spotlight Revue" from 1948. This has to be heard to be believed!

Boris Karloff reprises his stage performance in a radio adaption of "Arsenic & Old Lace" from 1946.

Boris Karloff in "Creeps by Night" from May 7th 1944.

Boris Karloff plays "Happy Sam, The Record Man" on "The Jimmy Durante Show".

Bela Lugosi and John Carradine in the off-the-wall classic, "Mystery House - The Thirsty Death".

Bela Lugosi in the Feb. 2nd episode of SUSPENSE "The Doctor Prescribed Death".

Bela Lugosi pretty much scares the crap out of an innocent Beverly Hills shopper in an episode of "Candid Mike", precursor to "Candid Camera"

Vincent Price as a crazed musician in the June 1st 1944 episode of SUSPENSE "Fugue in C minor" with Ida Lupino.

Vincent Price as a yet another crazed musician in "Hollywood Star Time - Hangover Square".

Vincent Price in "OBSESSION - Paranoia".

PS. Someone asked me what I thought of the new "KIRBY' book by Mark Evanier....
As The King himself once said - "Don't ASK - Just BUY!"
Possibly the best book on a comic creator, and the reproduction and design are superb.
No true Jack Kirby fan should be without it.
And remember friends, this is clean-up time and we're discounting all our silent electric UBIKs , by this much money. Yes, we're throwing away the bluebook. And remember, every UBIK on our lots has been used only as directed!

Gold Key "Virtual" Spinner Rack

Once again, a "virtual" spinner rack with links to downloadable pdfs of the books.
I tried to select according to taste, for variety and interest, subject to availability.

City Surgeon - Probably THE weirdest one-shot i've ever seen from Gold Key. We love that unbelievable cover, but the interiors are by Jack Sparling - not our favourite artist. Was this written by Gold Key's version of Joe Gill, the prolific Paul S. Newman?
City Surgeon

Man from U.N.C.L.E. #22 - Who does the art in this? I'm pretty sure he worked on the later issues of M.A.R.S. Patrol as well. And who does the writing for this stuff? Newman again? The story is a pretty off-the-wall tale involving space aliens in league with THRUSH.... all this and a Jet Dream back-up strip!
Man from U.N.C.L.E. #22

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea #22 - Reprint of an earlier issue, solid art by Albert Giolitti. I must confess that he's one of my favorite Gold Key artists, and I grew up enjoying his work in this title as well as Star Trek, Turok, Twilight Zone, Boris Karloff and his adaption of King Kong.
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea #22

Mighty Samson #22 - (Reprints #5) Great stuff from Otto (Bizarro) Binder and Frank (Red Sonja) Thorne....
Hmmm, now that's an idea, Bizarro Red Sonja....
On second thoughts, strike that.
Mighty Samson #22

John Steele - Another wacky 60's Gold Key one-shot (well, technically, there is that "Freedom Agent" one-shot with the giant chicken cover that features John Steele, but it's also Number 1). Personally, I think they should have called him Rod Steele (or Mark Thrust for that matter), they would have sold more copies.......... but that's just my opinion.
John Steele

Twilight Zone #13 - Oh man... for a while there in the early and mid-sixties, you'd NEVER know who would turn up doing art in Twilight Zone, Ripley's Believe It Or Not or Boris Karloff. This issue features a "Mars Is Heaven" knock-off "Way Out West - On Mars" by Reed Crandall. While the story is so-so (except maybe the last panel), the art is SUPERB.
Twilight Zone #13

Dr. Solar #11 - Probably one of the stranger issues of Dr. Solar, as he suffers from a string of bizarre side effects (giantism, amnesia) brought on yet again by his "powers". Goofy fun.
Dr Solar #11

Thriller #2 - Solid stuff by old hands George Evans, Mike Sekowsky, plus probably the best Albert Giolitti art i've ever seen. After the TV show "Thriller" was cancelled, the title morphed into the long-running "Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery" (see a previous post for more of these).
Thriller #2

On The Floor -

Phantom #13 - I'll be honest here... I feel that the Gold Key incarnation of The Phantom's 1960's 4-color adventures to be the most lack-luster of the bunch - Gimme the Charlton issues by Jim Aparo any day (see below).
Phantom #13

Dr. Spektor #11 - More weirdness from the under-rated Don Glut with the lush brush stylings of Jesse Santos (Dagar, Tragg).
Dr. Spektor #11

Turok #57 - Reprints. GOOD reprints. Honk!
Turok #57

UFO #1 - 64 pages of pre-X Files saucer-noia, Lotsa different artists in this one.
UFO #1

PS. While I want to fill these requests i've been getting, some of you guys NEED TO READ THE SMALL PRINT! To quickly re-cap for those who came in late: lots of files stored online. File storage service changed to social networking site. Files lost. I'll do what I can, but I also have a life. I do this for ME, not for you. Don't be so needy. You guys should see some of the comments I dont approve... I really wonder how many people on the planet would fail a Voight-Kampff test (if you don't know what that is see link below), and don't whine, it's unattractive!
I've said it before, and i'll say it again - Don't make me throw you down the stairs!

PPS. My NEW favorite blog has GOTTA be Total Dickhead,

but Plan 9 comes a close second... and remember kids - "The best way to ask for beer is to sing out for Ubik. Made from select hops, choice water, slow aged for perfect flavor, Ubik is the nation's number one choice in beer. Made only in Cleveland."
